Howdy hi! The summer solstice is tomorrow, and according to Mr. Science's calculations, the sun will be shining tomorrow for approximately 37 hours.
Had a good weekend out here. I installed a car stereo for a friend (I am now permanently on her good side). The old radio didn't have a "clock" power lead that stayed on when the ignition was off; no clock or presets on the old radio. So the new one can't have any preset radio stations, and the clock comes up at 1:00 when you start the car. The default frequency of the radio just happens to coincide with a horrendous Spanish radio station that only plays Mexican music, which I think is pretty funny.
I saw Speed, an amazing movie. The premise is kinda dumb (a bus that can't slow down below 50 MPH), and the trailer for it looked awful, but the movie was incredible. It's got all the action and tension of Die Hard and The Fugitive. Keanu "Excellent" Reaves (sp?) was pretty good, Dennis Hopper was off-the-wall, and Sandra Bullock (Demolition Man) is a babe. Two thumbs up. Way way way up. I don't think anything else this summer will be able to top this. Not even Beverly Hills Cop 3 or The Brady Bunch Movie. (Moviegoers - be afraid. Be very afraid.)
I leave tomorrow morning for New York. I'll be gone a week, attending a most-excellent wedding in Rahchester. This is gonna be great!
In other news, my negotiations with public radio station KXCI (not the Mr. Science station) have gone fairly well. I will be hosting their Friday night late 70s/early 80s show on July 15th, and I have license to do anything I want, including fancy station IDs, promotional flyers, and whatever else my nostalgic heart can dream up. Mark your calendars - on July 15th, Crap From The Past hits the airwaves. If it goes well, I could either (a) host the existing show about once every 3 or 4 weeks, or (b) get a separate Crap From The Past show if there's room in the schedule. This is gonna be great!
Now I have to get some work done. My boss is gonna kill me if I can't come up with an explanation of why the location of diffracted orders from a grating depends on the azimuthal angle of incidence. Simple as it sounds, it really isn't intuitive at all, actually. Oh well...
Enjoy your respective Mondays, and may your longest day of the year not be a hot and sticky one...

Ron's Big Life Update - May 1994
A certain Optics PhD student is very happy in Tucson tonight because he passed the oral half of his PhD prelim exams - the Big Exam needed to prove that one is qualified to do real research.
I'm going to Disneyland.

Ron's Big Life Update - April 1994
(written April 5th:)
Hi, world. March Madness is over, and we Arizonians are very proud of our Wildcats and their appearance in the Final Four. The team arrives back in AZ today, and we expect pandemonium along the parade route from the airport to the campus. Should be good!
I don't know if you heard, but there was some sabotage at the Biosphere 2 experiment here in Arizona. Apparently, two scientists from the last experiment went back and opened five of the airlocks. (Why? Nobody knows yet, although it was most certainly nice outside and I can see why they wanted to air out the place. I had my windows open too.) Well, Mr. Science heard that they're making the whole incident into a mini-series. It will be called "All This And Biosphere II", and will go something like this:
Life for the seven Biospherians was good. There were no traffic jams, no strip malls, and no low riders with megawatt stereo systems. In fact, their only connection with reality was the benevolent window washer, played by Tom Poston. UNTIL... Abigail and Mark, two evil scientists returning from Biosphere II The Previous Generation, paid them a little visit. Tension was high as they -GASP- let in some outside air! Abigail and Mark then fled, and are still running to this day. If you see them, don't make them angry; you won't like them when they're angry. And stay tuned for the sequel, "All This And Biosphere II II".

Hi from Tucson! Happy Happy Monday Monday! The weather here has gotten unpredictable. We had 45 MPH winds yesterday, and today's high is only 72 (10 degrees below normal). This is weird, since we were in the high 90s last week. No complaints, though.
Mr. Science finally went too far. After almost a year of trying, I finally recorded a bit that pushed the envelope a little too far, and consequently didn't make it onto the air. As you know, former president Richard Nixon passed away over the weekend. We'll all miss him, but there's just one loose end left over from those nasty Watergate days. There's that eighteen-minute gap in the audio tapes, where somebody had erased something. Well, I found out what was on that tape - it was the full length version of Iron Butterfly's "In A Gadda Da Vida". Of course he erased it! Can you blame him?
Well, for some reason (like good taste, and the fact that our listeners seem to take death seriously...) that didn't make it onto the air. I'm not sure if I'm proud or not, but I do know that I'll be back to rated-G material tomorrow. Oh well...
And that's the scoop from the land of sand. (Scoop? Sand? Sounds like a big litter box...)

Ron's Big Life Update - March 1994
(written March 7th:)
Hi, y'all. It's raining in Tucson on this lovely Monday morning. Bleh! It feels like I'm back in Rochester again...
I saw the Grateful Dead in Phoenix on Friday night. I went with a completely open mind, hoping to gain some insight into why this band has produced a subculture all its own. Unfortunately, they were awful. Not just awful, but hideously horrendously awful. You'd think after twenty-some odd years, the band would be tight, and would have some sort of stage presence. Not so; they looked more like they were just going through the motions, and didn't say a single word to the crowd the entire night. Actually, they looked kind of the like the robots in the Hall of Presidents! And then there was the 23-minute drum solo (no exaggeration - we timed it.) It was very very bad, and now I am even more perplexed as to why people like this band. Hapless, I think, is a good way to describe them.
But I did get a Mr. Science bit out of it. He called in his tie-dyed lab coat, and described the atmosphere of the show - sorta like Disneyland with drugs. And lots of drugs. And lots of people getting the munchies afterwards. In fact, the tour itself was sponsored by Frito-Lay. Etc...
I have to do work now??? Bleh.

Hi, y'all. It's only going up to 83 today. (Oh the humanity.) Didja watch the Oscars? Mr. Science did, and he came up with a great idea:
I have an idea for the ULTIMATE movie. I'll make sure that it makes millions - I'll get Steven Spielberg to produce it. And it has to have lots of action, so I'll get Steven Seagal to direct it. And it needs a great story, so I'll get Stephen King to write the screenplay. And Stevie Wonder will do the soundtrack. And as a lead character, I'll get Steven Wright. The title?
"Dweebie Stevie Gets The Heebie Jeebies".
Hope all is well in your respective lands of ice and snow. I'll be by the pool if you need me...

Hiya! I don't know if you've been following the NCAA March Madness 'Skitball Tourney, but the University of Arizona is in the Final Four! And for only the second time in our long illustrious career! Yeah! (And for those who saw Seinfeld last week, !!!!!!!!!!) Not surprisingly, I haven't seen any undergrads at all on campus yet; I suppose the hangovers should wear off by tomorrow. And I saw the Naked Gun 33-1/3 over the weekend. Loads o' laughs, as expected.
Otherwise, life is good. Today is sunny, high of 72. Although it's supposed to hit 90 by the end of the week... oy.
And happy Passover. Matzah for everyone!

Hey. Is the snow gone yet? Today's high: 87. (Click your heels together three times... there's no place like Tucson...)
The whole city is totally flipped out from Wildcats-are-in-the-Final-Four mania. In keeping with the hoopla, (pardon the pun), Mr. Science proposed some new rules that would make the game more exciting. You know about the three point thingy, so I propose the following additions to the scoring scheme:
If you score from half court, it's worth 7 points. If you score from inside the other team's three point circle, it's worth 11 points. If you score from under the other team's basket, it's worth 15 points. If you score from the corner while standing on another player's shoulders, it's worth 31 points. If the cheerleaders make a pyramid and you score from the top of the pyramid, it's worth 75 points. And a hook shot from the concession stand gets 217 points.
And that is all from the school-with-the-soon-to-be-world-champion-Wildcats,

Ron's Big Life Update - February 1994
(written February 14th:)
The ACTUAL and FACTUAL account of the origin of Valentine's Day.
Not many people realize that Valentine's Day was started by a famous Hollywood actor. In ancient California, Val Kilmer awoke one day to discover that his entire kitchen had been vandalized by a group of demented Norwegian thugs. The wacky Norwegians had vindictively broken the handles off all of Mr. Kilmer's utensils, and left them in a big pile on his kitchen floor. Mr. Kilmer, aghast that his precious collection of salad forks from around the world had been so blasphemously violated, collapsed in a heap atop the utensil remains. He was discovered by his next door neighbor, who was himself in the process of dumping his girlfriend. He used the sighting of Mr. Kilmer as an excuse to not visit her, claiming it was a holiday... ValInTyne's Day.
Thank you very much. Thank you.
Enjoy the buffet. I'll be here all week.

Hi, yall. How yall are?
Here's a brief, poignant, potentially metaphorical story of my weekend.
On Friday, I went to a UA hockey game. One of the fast food chains out here, Whataburger, has this deal where you get a free Whataburger and a drink if the UA hockey team scores more than 10 goals. Well, we won 13-3 on Friday, and I decided to get my free goodies for dinner yesterday. I marched in, told the guy behind the counter that I wanted whatever my ticket stub entitled me to, and waited while he went off to find a burger. Whataburger, following the lead from McDonalds, posted their nutrition information next to the counter, which I perused while I was waiting. One menu item in particular caught my attention - the breakfast platter with sausage. It was scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, and a biscuit. Their breakfast platter has 52.7 grams of fat. Yikes! Isn't that the lethal dosage?
Touching story, eh? Hope the weather's getting better where you are; we have a 20% chance of rain today. (Read: 80% chance of sunshine.)

I might have mentioned that Mr. Science moved to a new radio station in Tucson after the morning crew got fired at KRQ. The transition has been less than smooth, mostly because the DJs at this new station aren't funny at all.
On Friday, Mr. Science called in complaining about his breakfast. He'd been trying to save some money so he bought this budget-priced cereal, Cheapo's. It has the consistency of sawdust, and practically dissolves in milk! The list of ingredients: sugar, artificial flavoring. Yick! Although it's not all bad - if you send in 12 proofs of purchase, you get a free keychain with a picture of Grady from Sanford & Son.
It's in the 80's...

Ron's Big Life Update - January 1994
(written January 5th:)
Howdy, y'all. (Is is authentic Texas yet?) It's time for the Mr. Science update. And it's a goodie!
Last Tuesday, the phone rang at 7:45 AM while I was trying to sleep in, so my machine picked it up. It was the producer of the morning show at KRQ, and he said to call him back. I staggered to the phone and called him back, still completely asleep. He said that he had this woman on one of the other lines who called in with her own useless fact and wanted to be Miss Science. He wanted to fix us up on the air, so I agreed and he put me on hold. In the two or three minutes I was on hold, I came up with some questions to ask this Miss Science, like does she prefer boxers or briefs, etc. They put Miss Science and me on with Mike & Jimmy (the DJs) who set us up on the air, and they tell me it was pretty funny although I don't remember any of it because I was still asleep.
So we went out for coffee. It turns out that she's a premed undergrad here at UA, and is very attractive. While nothing happened on our date, I made up a wonderful story for the next morning's Mr. Science bit. It went something like this:
And that's the sad sad truth, the dirty lowdown from the land of sand.
It hit 84 degrees yesterday - a new record!
Ron
(written January 18th:)
It's 75 out here with the wind chill! Brrrrr!
So how's the frozen northeast? Tectonic stability is a good thing, isn't it? No, we didn't feel the earthquake in Tucson. I guess we don't feel much of anything at all in Tucson.
I climbed the highest mountain in the Tucson area on Sunday. Something like 9300 feet. It was a pretty arduoud climb, but the view was like nothing I've ever experienced before. We could see just about forever in all directions and could see over all of the other mountains. Cool! I could see into Mexico from the peak, and way past Tucson to the north. It was amazing, and I'm sore in weird places again. Not as bad as the 10K run, but pretty sore nonetheless.
It was really really cold on top of the mountain. 20 degrees! And there was some ice up there! ICE!! COOOOOLD!!!! Brr!! (I don't detect any sympathy heading my way...)
And that's the scoop,
Ron

Sorry about the weather. I won't burden you with the knowledge that it still hits 70 during the day out here. No snow. Or ice even.
In other news, my car battery died. I heard that Tucson kills batteries because it's so dry out here. Not a life-threatening situation, though.
And in other news, Mr. Science talked about his tattoo this morning, which happened to be a picture of Rerun from "What's Happening". Hey, Shirl! Hey, Dwayne! Hey, Rog!

Mr. Science: Good morning, Mike & Jimmy, it's Mr. Science, the prestidigitator of love. There's no way I'll ever be able to top this one; I may just retire at the peak of Mr. Science's career.
Mike & Jimmy: So!!! I guess it went pretty well last night.
Mr. S: Yes it did! I went out with this Miss Science person and it turns out that she knows just as much useless information as I do.
M & J: So what happened on the date?
Mr. S: Well, I picked her up in my low-rider Ford Escort, and we drove out to this little place I know by the river. Just her and me and Barry White playing in the background.
M & J: Uh-huh.
Mr. S: We watched the clouds for a while, and I told her that clouds are flat on the bottom. We walked along the river for a while and she told me that the average person walks about 70,000 miles in his lifetime.
M & J: -laughter-
Mr. S: We stopped and stared into each other's eyes and I told her that your skin weighs almost twice as much as your brain. And I wasn't just interested in her brain if you know what I mean.
M & J: -laughter- Uh huh.
Mr. S: If you know what I'm saying.
M & J: Uh huh.
Mr. S: If you catch my drift.
M & J: Uh huh.
Mr. S: Nudge nudge wink wink.
M & J: Say no more.
Mr. S: Well, things got a little steamy when she told me that American shoe sizes tend to get larger with each generation.
M & J: -laughter-
Mr. S: And she wanted to know MY size. You know what they say about guys with big feet; they wear big shoes.
M & J: Uh huh. -laughter- So it went pretty well then?
Mr. S: Suffice it to say that you can't belch while you're lying down, and there wasn't a whole lot of belching going on last night.
M & J: -more laughter- Wow! It sounds like things went pretty well!
Mr. S: Yeah! In fact we have plans this weekend. We'll be testing the theory of gravity by dropping this off the roof. We're gonna see which falls faster - a bowling ball or an ice sculpture of Dom Deluise.
M & J: -much laughter- Well congratulations, Mr. Science.
Mr. S: Set the bread maker to matzah, I think I'm in love.
M & J: -lots of laughter into a commercial.-
And that's the sad sad truth, the dirty lowdown from the land of sand.

Ron's Big Life Update - December 1993
(written December 1st:)
Hi, all. Today's Mr. Science came out abnormally good, so I thought I'd share it with you. Yesterday, this guy Daniel called up KRQ and told Mike & Jimmy (morning show hosts) that he had a bet with a buddy of his that he could get a date with Betsy (news babe). Mike & Jimmy told this guy to come down to the station and stand in the parking lot so Betsy could check him out without actually getting too close to him, since Betsy bases everything on looks. He showed up this morning and they all checked him out on the air, which was very funny.
Well, five minutes later, Mr. Science called in and explained that he was the guy who made the bet with this Daniel guy, and that Betsy should go out with Mr. Science instead. Dialogue went something like this:
And so goes the life of Tucson's favorite call-in radio scientist,
Mr. Science
(written December 17th:)
Hi, all.
Looks like a quiet Friday is coming. I went to the KRQ Christmas Party last night, and unlike a great number of others, all I had to drink was a Coke. I had a good time, and I met a lot of people who said "YOU'RE Mr. Science?" I think that's a good thing.
I also missed the Simpsons and Seinfeld because I forgot to set my VCR (Doooo!)
Life plods on in the world of sun,
Ron

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the land of sand. It's 58 degrees out here - brrr! Aside from the miserably crystal-clear, precipitation-free weather, everything is going well.
Happy 1994.

Well, five minutes later, Mr. Science called in and explained that he was the guy who made the bet with this Daniel guy, and that Betsy should go out with Mr. Science instead. Dialogue went something like this:
Mr. Science: ... so I think Betsy should go out with ME instead. And right after they aired the Mr. Science phone call, some woman called in and said that she lost a bet so she'd have to go out on a date with our producer, Curly. Many yuks.
Mike Jimmy & Betsy: Well why should Betsy go out with YOU?
Mr. S: Well, I'm an intelligent guy.
MJB: We knew that.
Mr. S: I'm six foot six.
MJB: -Laughter- Funny, that's not quite how we pictured you.
Mr. S: And I'm two hundred fifty pounds. And it's all muscle.
MJB: -More laughter- So what would you do on this date?
Mr. S: Well, I know how much Betsy loves tractor pulls...
MJB: And who doesn't?
Mr. S: ...so after the tractor pull, I think we'd go for a nice romantic candlelight dinner at Greasy Tony's.
MJB: -More laughter- -a rebuttal that amounted to "No way" amidst laughter.-
And so goes the life of Tucson's favorite call-in radio scientist,
Mr. Science

Happy 1994.
